School is out for the summer and the sun is here to play! While summer vacation means more fun, it can throw off your normal dental routine. Here are three ways to stick to your routine and prevent summertime tooth decay.
1. Avoid Sugary Drinks and Snacks
As it gets hotter, it’s normal to drink those carbonated beverages and sugary snacks during sports tournaments, festivals or any community event. Be sure to watch your family’s consumption of lemonade and soda as too much of these tasty drinks can be harmful to your teeth. A great substitute is water, because staying hydrated is very important, especially in the Summer heat. Avoiding sugary snacks is healthy for your teeth as it allows time for saliva to bathe your teeth and wash away leftover food.
2. Establish a Routine
It’s very important for families to consistently brush and floss. Establishing a routine helps to keeps kids on track for healthy back-to-school dental visits. No matter how busy the Summer months become, ensure that your kids are brushing twice a day for 2 minutes with fluoride toothpaste. Don’t forget to floss! Help your children floss between any two teeth that touch.
3. Schedule Your Back-to-School Dental Visit Early
